In addition, the collar of this year's Reverse Retro jersey appears as an ode to captain Alex Ovechkin's rookie year, with the year 2005 written on it. The reboot also features symmetrical stripes and an unconventional system of custom player name and number fonts in new bold colors - Capital Blue and Metallic Copper.
2022-23 marks the first season in which the primarily black jersey will feature a screaming eagle with a dimensional crest treatment on it. The Roaring Eagle was recently introduced with a red color scheme in 2020 as the team's first Reverse Retro shirt.
The downward screaming eagle of the design is meant to evoke the energy, power and speed of the eagle, which was chosen for its symbolic status as the national bird of the United States. The shoulder patch depicts the Capital Building in front of two crossed hockey sticks.
The logo is complete with two stars in the background and a hockey puck wrapped between the blades of the sticks. Additionally, the Capitals creative brand through the presentation of arena games, digital channels and more will feature a throwback theme honoring the jerseys.

The distinct color palette of the uniform is paired with design trends inspired by the technology of the 90s and early 2000s. Sepia tones, foils, halftone dots and plastic textures are influenced by the gadget culture of the time, now seen through a modern lens.
As part of the jersey launch, the Capitals also launched an influencer campaign featuring throwback apparel and items, including a hat, tote bag, '90s cassette player that scans to a '90s playlist curated by the Capitals, retro koozies, paper
fortune and 90s Goodies, including a bracelet, gum band, fun dip and tissues. The influencer kits also have a QR code that the recipient can scan and select one of the Reverse Retro games to attend.
The Reverse Retro jersey is reminiscent of the Capital jerseys introduced in 1995, with a blue, black and bronze color scheme and the Capitol building on the shoulder. The blue, black and bronze Screaming Eagle color scheme was first introduced by the Capitals on June 22, 1995. This year's Reverse Retro jersey is an amalgamation of the Capitals' first third jersey, which became the street jersey in 2000, and the original rebrand of the Screaming Team's jerseys.
